MAY MADNESS
By Tyler Smith 3/14/2020
May Madness anyone? I take a look into moving the tournament to May. Would it even be possible just from a facility standpoint? The answer is yes.
Of course, there could be events that are not listed, but one can dream.
2020 Tournament Locations And Dates
Date: May 14th-29th
Locations:
First Four
Everything is good to go for the first four. No issues.
Dayton-UD Arena
First and Second Round
May 14th-17th
Three big issues here. One is in Saint Louis. We have a concert at the Enterprise Center on the 16th. However, you could have games there 15th and 17th if possible.
I searched for new options in Saint Louis. Chaifetz Arena, on the campus of SLU, only holds 10k, not the best option. The Dome at The Americas has no events and has hosted the tournament several times. Let's lock in the dome.
The next issue is Omaha. A private event was listed in the arena with no details on the event, but let’s say it can not be moved. We have several options in Omaha, but they are all too small.
We have to head to Lincoln for this portion of the tournament. The best option to keep it in Nebraska. Pinnacle Arena, welcome to the tournament.
In Spokane has a graduation schedule for the 17th. I don't see a problem getting that moved considering classes have been canceled. Hockey game on the 16th, but without a great secondary option games will have to be played 15th and 17th.
Cleveland, OH-Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse
Albany, NY-Times Union Center
Saint Louis, MO-The Dome at The Americas
Tampa Bay, FL-Amalie Arena
Greensboro, NC-Greensboro Coliseum
Lincoln, NE-Pinnacle Bank Arena
Sacramento, CA-Golden 1 Center
Spokane, WA-Spokane Arena
Regional Semifinals and Finals
May 21st-24th
Two issues in LA and Houston.
The NBA would be underway and the Rockets, Clippers, and Lakers all have strong possibilities of playing.
Houston is simple. Move it to NRG Stadium. The venue has hosted the tournament in the past.
LA is an easy fix. Move it to the Honda Center in Anaheim, which has been a host in the past.
Midwest
Indianapolis, IN-Lucas Oil
West
Anaheim, CA-Honda Center
South
Houston, TX-NRG Stadium
East
New York, New York-Madison Square Garden
Final Four
May 29th-31st
Final Four is good to go!
Atlanta, GA-Mercedes Benz Stadium
So there it is, MAY MADNESS locations are set!
Some minor moves, nothing major. This took me about an hour to do.
One can dream.

Other issues to think about:
TV-CBS/Turner wouldn’t turn down massive ratings, but I am sure there would be some challenges here.
Travel-I don’t see May as a major travel month. Probably not a huge issue.
Practice-So after such a long delay, when would they be able to practice again? If a school is officially canceled, could they still practice? That is a massive hurdle.
Other Winter/Spring sports-So basketball is back, but what about us? This is likely where the biggest issue would fall. The NCAA would have a hard time justifying that.
Selection Sunday is upon us so if the NCAA wants a jump start here is what I came up with!
