Overview
UCF went undefeated in 2017, National Championship rings were passed out and some couldn't handle all the fun. 2018 will bring more of the same despite some familiar faces being gone. Scott Frost is gone, Shaquem Griffin, Tre'Quan Smith and Mike Hughes now play on Sundays. Insert Josh Heupel as HC. Heupel has held a OC position at 3 schools before getting his first shot at a head coaching spot. Last season Heupel led Missouri to top 15 rankings in total offense, points per game and passing yards. That is great news for the returning players for UCF.
Quarterback Mckenzie Milton is back under center after a massive year that led to UCF being ranked first in points per game with 48.2. He has two of his top options back from last season Deadrick Snelson and Gabriel Davis. Snelson had 8 scores last season. Two players to keep an eye on at receiver are Marlon Williams and freshman, Ke'Von Ahmad. One spot where they may take a step back is tight end as they lose all of their production from last season. The offensive line brings back some experience plus JUCO transfer Trevor Elbert. The line will end up being one of the best in the AAC. The running game features returning starter Adrian Killins. Killins nearly averaged 6.5 yards per carry last season.
The defense will need some one to emerge at DE. Dedrion Bacote-Sweat should be the next big thing off the edge for the Knights. Trysten Hill is back at DT. UCF will once again have the top linebacker unit. Pat Jasinski is a first team All-AAC talent at ILB. Titus Davis will have the opportunity to put together his best season. The secondary is just as strong as they were last season with 3 of 4 starters back. Nevelle Clarke will replace Mike Hughes. Corner Brandon Moore as a freshman had 8 passes broken up, 3 behind Hughes. The team forced 20 interceptions last season which will be tough to repeat but they will need to continue to be opportunistic on defense.
Looking at the schedule at Memphis, at USF and FAU at home standout. These three games will have a huge impact on how this season goes. If they can set the tone earlier with a win over FAU, watch out. This team has the capabilities to run the table in conference play but going on the road vs USF and Memphis will make it difficult. With Milton at QB anything is possible. Here's to another fantastic season in Orlando!

Overview
The USF defense got back to their dominant ways in 2018. They forced plenty of turnovers and got after the QB. Five starters return from that team. USF feels they will be able to be just as strong this season in their 4-2-5 alignment. DE Greg Reaves will get after the QB. Reaves had 14 TFL in '17. USF was strong against the run last season but have to replace both starters at DT. Several sophomores are getting a shot in the rotation. Watch this spot in the first few games to see who emerges. The secondary brings back three starters. Senior corner Mazzi Wilkins had 3 interceptions last season. Watch for former four star, Craig Watts to begin to make a name for himself this season. Linebacker Auggie Sanchez led the team in tackles last season but he has graduated. Linebacker might not be the strongest position on the team but they have talent in front and behind them.
USF will have a strong O-line this season. Which should help ease in a new QB. Chris Oladokun or Brett Kean will be given the tall task of replacing one of the most productive QBs in College Football history, Quinton Flowers. They will be targeting Tyree McCants and Darnell Salomon a lot this season. Look for Salomon to have a breakout season. Last season USF had a top 10 rushing attack. They lost nearly 3,000 yards of production. Jordan Cronkrite comes in from Florida where he didn't get much of a chance to show his skill. He will get an opportunity in game one for USF.
The East division is pretty weak. USF should have no problem there. They draw Houston and Tulsa on the road from the West which is doable. One non-conference game that may seem like a cake walk but will be tougher than expected is UMass. Getting to play UCF to finish the season should be fantastic!
As long as Oladokun or Kean emerge at QB this team will be in the top half of the East with no problems.

Overview
Temple can't get by with only scoring 25 points per game. After the QB switch to Frank Nutile the Owls found more success. Though three of their four wins were against inferior opponents they were able to win those games. Nutile will have a talented WR to throw to Isaiah Wright. They should put a larger focus on getting him the ball in space to make plays. With several key receivers gone look for Ventell Bryant to get back to form after a sluggish 2017 season.
The line should be able to produce a nice rushing attack. Matt Hennessy has already proven to be one of the top centers in the nation as a freshman. Fair and Robinson should be strong at guard. The running back position has two options David Hood and Ryquell Armstead. Both players ran for over 600 yards and had 5 touchdowns.
No surprise here, Temple has a strong linebacker unit. All three starters are back. Shaun Bradley is the best of the bunch. He had 85 tackles last season. SLB Sam Franklin made his presence felt with 4 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. Chappelle Russell returns at WLB. All three starters are juniors.
While the Owls lost a lot of talent on the line they will be just as strong. Dan Archibong and Micheal Dogbe form a great pair at DT. Dogbe could be the breakout player that Temple needs. Quincy Roche should put up even better numbers than his impressive freshman season. The defensive end had 7 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
The secondary is the weakest unit. They do have an AAC first team performer returning in Delvon Randall. They bring in Rock Ya-Sin at corner as well.
The schedule was not kind to the Owls with games at Houston and Navy in cross-division match ups. The non-conference slate isn't spectacular but Maryland and Buffalo are better than what most think. A trip to BC will be tough though. Too many challenging road games will have this team finishing third.

Overview
If Luke Fickell can't get this offense going the Bearcats will continue to hover around 4 wins. They ranked 100th or better in several offensive categories including scoring, rushing and total yards. The O-line didn't give up many sacks last year but with only two starters and not a ton of depth this could turn into a major concern. If Hayden Moore is going to flip the script the line will be crucial. Moore has his top target Kahlil Lewis back. Lewis caught 61 balls and found the end zone 7 times. No one else on the team had more than 30 catches last season.
The returning running backs only had a total of 3 touchdowns last season. Doaks and Warren are the top backs. This team at the end of the year could look a lot different since the Bearcats have had top AAC recruting class the past two years. Could the youth movement be on? Yes, and if not, why not?
The offense had their struggles and the defense wasn't short on them either. Where they could make a vast improvement is upfront. They have a senior led line, that will be better than what people are currently projecting. Copeland and Broughton are the keys to this teams success from the DT spot. Several sophomores sit in the wings in the two deep rotation. Could they find a DE in that group that can find the QB is the big question. The Bearcats have struggled to put pressure on QBs since Fickell's arrival.
Perry Young led the team in tackles with 101. Expect him to get over 100 again this season. The lack of pressure from the line has trickled down to the secondary not being able to cause turnovers. Just 5 interceptions last season. The corner spot will feature underclassmen while the safety spots will have two seniors. The two only combined for 70 tackles last season. They will need to become more of a factor this season.
This team doesn't look to be going anywhere quick. The last two recruiting classes that they brought in should start to see more playing time this year and paving the way for a brighter future. The out of conference schedule is more difficult than it looks. Ohio and Miami OH are not going to go down easy. They will need to win those games to even think about a bowl game. A split is the likely outcome. You get the feeling that Fickell has a pass this season but heading into next year the pressure is going to build.

Overview
The offense moved the ball in 2017 but they could not convert those yards into points. 50th in yards per game and 103rd in points per game. The outlook does not look pretty for this season. It could get worse. If David Pindell is the QB you turn to in game one, UConn fans should be very concerned. Sadly who ever is under center is going to struggle with a below average line (that may be kind). Three starters are back from a young O-line. Maybe the experience will raise the level of play.
Skill spots aren't looking great either. Top returning WR doesn't have over 50 catches, top RB only had 561 yards. This season is strictly about rebuilding on offense.
The positive is that only two starters return from one of the worst defenses of all time. It can't get any worse, can it? Maybe. I could write something here that maybe gives UConn fans promise and a positive outlook but I won't. Look up and down this roster there's not a single thing you can point to that is going to be a strong or top half unit in the AAC. Not one position group. So many questions.
I wouldn't be so concerened this season about how well the defense is looking but more so how good the underclassmen are playing and where this defense could be in two years. Yes, two years.
7 starters are back from a 3-9 team. If you can find a team strength let me know on Twitter. I can't. Opening the season with UCF is the last team you want to see day one since they throw the ball better than anyone in the country. Week 2 at Boise. laughter ensues. Don't look at UMass as a "guaranteed" win either. They have more talent than you do. ECU on November 17th is your Super Bowl.

Overview
ECU wouldn't be in this spot had their QB not left for Washington State. Reid Herring looks like the QB of the future but it may be tough to tell at times this year. The supporting cast is nothing to brag about. The good news is ECU is always good for one big time WR. Trevon Brown is that guy. He is always a a threat to make a big play. He had over 1,000 yards on just 60 catches. The problem is after Brown they lack proven players. As they lost three of their top 4 pass catchers.
The offensive line is going to be an issue this season. Sophomore center John Spellacy is the best of the group but they will need everyone around him to step up. The Pirates don't often look to run the ball. Hussein Howe and Darius Pinnix will get the majority of the carries this year. If the Pirates improve in the Red Zone they won't be nearly as bad as I have them projected but that is a big if. They only made it to the Red Zone 44 times and failed to convert 25% of their opportunities.
The defense was the worst in the nation in points scored and yards given up. How much improvement will they be able to make up in one year? Not much this season. Only three starters are back but they do have experience on the roster. Though those players were apart of the worst defense in the country last season. Blackwell will be a stamp on this team as the DC but it won't happen overnight. The D line has some promise but how can you not have promise after only putting up 11 sacks last season. It can't get much worse. Improving in turnover margin will be another focus this season. They had just 7 interceptions in '17. Too many issues to vastly improve this season.
How this team makes a bowl is beyond me. That's this years team goal. The schedule is doing them no favors. Rebuilding mode has put a damper on ECU fans, a fan base that I wold have considered a few years back to be the most impressive in the AAC. Can you blame them for taking a step back though? No. Ruffin McNeill wasn't so bad, huh?

Overview
Last years offense was a lot of fun to watch. While they may not score 45.5 ppg this year they will still put up big numbers. David Moore seems to be next in line to take over at QB for the Tigers. Moore has the tools to make this offense even more dynamic this season. Moore has the luxury of welcoming back 4 of 5 starters from a strong offensive line. He also has the best tight end duo in the AAC, Sean Dykes and Joey Magnifico. He will be without a ton of production at WR. They have promising players here in John Williams and Damonte Coxie. JUCO transfer Antonio Gibson should make an impact this season.
The running game will be at an elite level with Moore at QB and Darrell Henderson back at RB. Henderson topped 1,100 yards with just 130 carries. Add in the red zone punch that Patrick Taylor has and this team has all the components for a top level running attack. Taylor had 13 touchdowns to go with 866 yards. While many teams aren't capable of reloading in this league, Memphis is.
What a difference former four star, T.J, Carter made for the Tigers in his first year. Five interceptions, 11 passes broken up and 69 tackles as a corner. The secondary will be strong this season with 2 other starters back. Linebackers should be a top 3 unit in the conference. Curtis Akins returns with 88 tackles last season. Another freshman that made an impact was LB Tim Hart. He could end up being on the best linebackers Memphis has ever had when it is all said and done. Look for him to continue to get after the QB. Austin Hall was second in tackles last year, he plays the star position.
If the line takes a step forward after a promising 2017 campaign this defense will improve a lot. O'Bryan is at NT after playing in 12 games last season as a freshman. The numbers don't look great from last season but it was enough for this team to win 10 games. They should do the same and more than likely better from a defensive perspective.
I love how this schedule falls for Memphis. Soft non-conference opponents early. At Navy will be a tall task but catching them early is better than late with the amount of players they lost from last years team. They have a nice path on the road. Get Houston and UCF at home. Missouri in the middle of the schedule will be an intriguing game since they play similar styles. Double digit wins could happen again!

Overview
Malcolm Perry and Zach Abey are both back at QB. Malcolm Perry seems to be the early front runner for the starting spot. Perry nearly doubles the average of rushing per carry over Abey. While QB will be fine the backfield is a bit of a question mark. They lost nearly all of their production excluding FB Anthony Gargiulo. Who emerges in the slot back positions will be key to this season.
The offensive line brings back both tackles but the interior is bare. The interior has a massive impact on how this offense works so finding the right group to fill those three spots could be the difference in this teams season. As for the receiving unit. Not a single WR on the team that had a catch returns this season. The good news, they don't pass the ball around 50 times a game.
The defense was strong all year long. They kept Navy in games and that is really all you can ask for. They held Memphis and UCF to just 61 points combined. They do however lose some key players from that team. They lost all four linebackers including D.J. Palmore and Micah Thomas. Replacing those two will not be easy.
The secondary brings back Sean Williams for his final season. Williams is the top returning tackler from his safety position. The defensive line should be strong this year with Josh Webb, Jackson Pittman and Jarvis Polu. That unit will be tough to handle week in, week out.
Only 8 starters are back from a team that finished 7-6. They were within 10 points on each of those losses. The issue is they are missing some key players from the offense and defense. The good news is Malcolm Perry can elevate this team. The defense will need the defensive line to be one of the best in the league to help out the deficiencies they have behind them. The schedule is favorable though. The non-conference slate is full of opportunity. The conference schedule has them playing UC from the east and having Memphis, Houston and Temple at home. UCF is on the schedule but Memphis has them as well. Don't expect another 4-4 record in AAC play for the Midshipmen.

Overview
This is the year that the Tulane offense breaks out. QB Jonathan Banks has a year under his belt in the system. Banks led the team in rushing with 592 and 7 scores. His ability to run will thrive in year two. The offensive line brings back 4 starters but lose their starting center to FAU. This units continued growth will be a major factor in how well this team produces.
The running game has several new faces. Texas Tech transfer Corey Dauphine should bring fans to their feet with his big play ability. Darius Bradwell will get the most carries this season and is more of an all-around runner. The running game is going to be fantastic. When Tulane goes to the air they will have familiar options as their top three receivers back. Encalade and Mooney both averaged over 17 yards per catch last season with 4 touchdowns. The pieces are their for the Green Wave to turn things up a notch this season on offense.
The defense lost 8 starters. Parry Nickerson being the best of the bunch. The secondary however could end being very strong this season. Roderic Teamer and Donnie Lewis both return. Lewis had 3 interceptions last season. The addition of P.J. Hall at SS should help in coverage.
The one other starter that is back is Zachery Harris. Harris was third in tackles last season. One of the teams top recruits in the 2018 class was OLB La'Dedric Jackson. Depending on how the season progresses don't be surprised if he sees plenty of action.
Another freshman that Tulane fans should be excited to see is NG Jeffery Johnson. At 6'3, 317 pounds, he is just what this defense needed. The line will be full of underclassmen this season. Former 3 star recruit, Cameron Sample, should see a lot of time on the line this year. If the line comes together by week 6 this could end up being a great year for Tulane.
Both offense and defense need their lines to make an impact for this team to continue to trend up. Banks in year two in this system should thrive. The schedule gives them UC and ECU from the East which is about as good as it gets. The last two games of the year vs. Navy and Houston will be huge. It could be the difference between their first year without a losing record or another 5-7 year.

Overview
Houston only brings back 3 starters on offense. They also have a new OC, Kendal Briles. Briles offenses have proven to put up massive points, but do they have the right players in place? If they land on QB Quenten Dormnady I would be concerned. If they go with King, which should happen, you should feel more confident. King switched from WR to QB for the last four games last season. He played well overall and was more productive than the other two options they had.
The problem is he enters the season as the teams top returning receiver. Bonner and Dunbar were so damn good it isn't a surprise that some of the other WR's didn't get a ton of balls their way. The one to watch is Courtney Clark. He only played in 7 games last season but is poised for a breakout year in 2018.
The running game has similar issues, not a lot of experience. The unit would be solid had Catalon not transferred out. Look for several players to get a chance early on until they find a nice rotation. Mulbah Car has the most experience on the team but he still had under 100 carries. The line in front of them should be fine. Three starters back. Josh Jones is one of the best LT in the AAC. Will Noble is a top center.
Ed Oliver has made an impact for Houston since day one. Oklahoma fans remember. This will be Oliver's last season for Houston. The Outland Trophy winner will be joined by Jerard Carter and TCU transfer Chambers at DE this line is going to be dangerous.
The Cougars will be solid in the secondary as well as linebacker. Linebackers Emeke Egbule and Leroy Godfrey will see their roles expand this season since both of Houston's top tacklers have departed. Both players combined for 14.5 tackles for loss last season. The secondary brings back one of the best safeties in the league, Garret Davis. Corner will be led by two seniors Alexander Myres and Isaiah Johnson.
Houston will have a top 3 defense in the league if not the best. The offense has so many uncertainties it is hard to gauge how well they will play. I don't see them being worse than last year with stability at QB. The schedule gives them Memphis and Navy on the road. They also have South Florida and Temple from the East. The schedule is not setup for this team to get up to 9 wins this season.

Overview
The offense under Chad Morris was electric. Morris is gone but they bring in Sonny Dykes who runs an air raid attack. Dykes will have a QB that is capable of handling his offense, Ben Hicks. Hicks put up great numbers last season including 33 TDs. The problem is he lost elite talents Courtland Sutton and Trey Quinn. They accounted for over 60 percent of Hicks passing yards. James Proche will be the next in line to be a stud WR at SMU. WR Treveon Johnson is their top recruit in the 2018 class. They will need guys to step up so you could see some freshman getting chances.
Dykes usually went to the running game around 430 times a season at Cal. Xavier Jones will be getting the majority of those carries. Jones had over 1,000 rushing yards last season. Ke'Mon Freeman will take up the rest of the carries that Jones doesn't get. Freeman was a major threat in the red zone with 11 scores. The line may have more depth this season but will they improve their overall production.
Giving up 36.7 points per game isn't going to cut it this season. SMU brings back 7 starters from that '17 team. The good news is they brought in proven coordinator Kevin Kane from NIU. All four starters return in the secondary. A unit that allowed 269 yard per game last season. I have no doubt that they will improve on that number this season. Jordan Wyatt has first team All-AAC potential. One thing that should change this season is Mikial Onu leading the team in tackles from his safety spot. If the safety leads the team that is traditionally not a positive.
Up front they will miss Justin Lawler greatly. Getting after the QB will be a focus under Kane. Tyeson Neals had 4.5 sacks last year. OLB Richard Moore could be another key factor in getting to the QB. Moore is a transfer from Texas A&M.
The defense has got to improve. If they do, SMU has a chance to prove me wrong. The offense should be just fine under Dykes lead. The schedule is brutal though. Non-conf features North Texas, TCU and Michigan. So tough. AAC slate isn't letting up. UCF from the east and a trip to Tulane which will be a key game. They draw Memphis, Houston and Navy at home. This would be a great year for season tickets!

Overview
It wasn't pretty last season on defense. They ranked 112 or higher in all the key categories. Injuries did play a factor but damn that is bad. They went from 29 points a game to 37.5 per game in one year. Similar to SMU they had a safety lead the team in tackles, McKinley Whitfield. However he did play some LB. Manny Bunch and Jordan Mitchell are back from injury so that should improve the secondary.
The team has big issues up front. Top returning player in sacks only had one. HE IS THE ONLY RETURNING PLAYER WITH A SACK. Unless some incoming players can turn things around this line will be poor. Linebacker should be fine with Diamon Cannon, Cooper Edmiston and Robert Revels back.
The receivers that Tulsa have are great. Justin Hobbs and Keenen Johnson can make things happen when presented the chance. The problem is the QB situation was a mess last season and it still isn't fixed. Luke Skipper seems to be the front runner but if you are a Golden Hurricane fan, you have to be praying one of the freshman rise to the occasion. The O-line does have the pieces to be very successful this season. Three senior starters are back as well as senior TE Chris Minter.
The running attack will miss D'Angelo Brewer who had 288 carries last season. Shamari Brooks proved he could be next in line as a freshman last season scoring 10 touchdowns. They will need someone else to emerge to balance out the rushing attack.
I tried to warn Tulsa fans last season that it would be ugly. They didn't want to listen. This year looks to be more of the same. It is hard to find wins on the schedule. AAC games at Navy, at Temple, at Houston, and at Memphis aren't helping their cause. Texas, Arkansas and Arkansas State in non-conference play will be tough to navigate. Things are getting real ugly for Philip Montgomery and company.
