MAC Football Preview 2018
By Matt Hetzler
Arenafanatic's MAC Preview has dominated the competition since we started putting out a preview in 2012. For the past five years we have at least one accolade for the Mid American Conference. There's a reason we call him "MACtion Matt". Accolades are based of the Stassen.

Overview
Ohio lost 3 MAC games by a one possession, leading to a surprising non-title game appearance in 2017. Ohio entered the season an an overwhelming favorite in the MAC East. It’s a new season in Athens, OH and the expectations are the same. Ohio is the overwhelming favorite once again to win the MAC East crown. Frank Solich has continued to win at Ohio and it’s been a remarkable run for the Bobcats.
Ohio’s offense finished top 10 nationally after averaging 39 ppg. That offense returns 8 starters, including top QB Nathan Rourke. Rourke is coming off of an All-MAC year, where he threw for 2,203 yards and ran for 912 with 38 combined TD, (21 rush, 17 pass). Leading rusher AJ Ouellette is back after breaking the 1,000 yard mark in his junior season. Ohio makes their money by running the ball (1st in the MAC), however they have some playmakers at the wideout position. Papi White averaged over 17 yards per catch and Andrew Meyer is one of Rourke’s favorite targets. The Bobcats return 4 offensive linemen, including multiple All-MAC winners (Joe Anderson & Joe Lowery).
Ohio fielded one of the best defenses in the MAC in 2017, but return only 4 starters in ‘18. The Bobcats must find a replacement for Quentin Poling. Evan Croutch appears to be the guy who can but don’t overlook sophomore Jared Dosa. Ohio replaces all four defensive linemen. Replacing Bradd Ellis in the secondary won’t be easy. Jalen Fox finished ‘17 with 11 PBU and 2 INT. Javon Hagan returns with the team lead in tackles (85). Solich always fields a great Bobcats defense but this particular group is young and inexperienced.
For Ohio, this season is all about winning a MAC Championship. It won’t come easy breaking in a new group of guys on defense and a tough conference road schedule. Ohio draws away games at Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and rival Miami (OH). In the non-conference, Ohio could finish 4-0, games at Cincinnati and at Virginia will be the difference. In conference, there are only 2 teams (Miami, Northern Illinois) that can defend Ohio’s offensive attack. Despite the concerns on defense, Ohio should be able to win double digits games and make their second MAC title game appearance in 3 seasons.

Overview
In 2017, the Buffalo Bulls finished the season with a .500 record for the first time since 2013. Buffalo enters the season with a chip on their shoulder after being snubbed by the bowl committee. Buffalo returns 8 starters on an offensive that finished 3rd in the MAC in total offense and led the conference in the passing attack (291 ypg).
Junior Tyree Jackson returns at QB for the Bulls. Jackson looked sharp in ‘17, completing 60% of his passes and sporting a 4-1 TD/INT ratio. Buffalo is looking great in the running game with the return of Johnathan Hawkins and last seasons leading rusher Emmanuel Reed. Superstar WR Anthony Johnson is back for his senior season. Johnson earned 1st team All-MAC in 2017, after posting 76 receptions for 1,356 yards and 14 TD. KJ Osborn, Antonio Nunn, and Tyler Mabry are the supporting act to the Johnson show. 3 starters return up front but it’s an offensive line with plenty of experience.
The Bulls defense returns 6 starters from a year ago. None bigger than senior LB Khalil Hodge. Hodge is an absolute freak at the MLB position. Hodge led the Bulls with 154 tackles, earning 1st team All-MAC honors. DE. Chuck Harris will look to surpass his sack total (4) from ‘17. Tatum Slack is one of two returning starters in the secondary. Slack led the Bulls with 9 PBU. Adam Mitcheson needs to be more consistent in the kicking game this season. He struggled hitting just 15-24 FG.
Lance Leipold has done a great job in Buffalo. This is by far his most talented roster and it’s a team good enough to contend in the MAC. Anthony Johnson and Khalil Hodge are special talents, but Tyree Jackson steers the ship. If Jackson builds on his successes in ‘17, there’s little doubt in my mind that Buffalo could win the MAC. The offense will be explosive and should be one of the best in the conference. Buffalo is talented enough to beat Temple, Rutgers and Army in the non-conference. The Bulls were a few plays short of a 7-1 MAC record, losing 3 games by a combined 5 points. It’ll be hard to leave the Bulls out of a bowl game after winning 8 games.

Overview
Chuck Martin leads the Redhawks for a new season in Oxford. Martin enters the year with plenty to prove and firmly on the hot seat. Martin carries a 16-33 record into a must-win year for the coach. Expectations could not be higher for the Miami Redhawks than they are in 2018.
Gus Ragland returns for his senior season. Ragland has battled injuries throughout his Miami career. When he is healthy, Miami is winning games. Ragland is a career 60% passer and has an impressive 39-8 TD/INT ratio. Kenny Young and Alonzo Smith are one of the finest 1-2 punches in the MAC. The duo combined for over 1,400 yards in 2017. Ragland’s top target at WR returns. James Gardner is coming off of a 1st team All-MAC junior season where he hauled in 47 catches for 927 yards and 11 scores. 6’5” Luke Mayock could have a breakout season. Miami returns all 5 big men up front. Sam Sloman returns as kicker, he converted 12-16 last season.
Miami had one of the better defenses in the MAC in ‘17. With 8 starters returning, Miami could field the best defense in the conference. Brad Koenig (103 tackles, 7.5 for loss) and Junior McMullen (57 tackles) headline a stout group of LB’s in the heart of the Redhawk defensive front. Costin and Calcagno look to wreak havoc on the d-line after a combined 8.5 sacks last season. Safety Josh Allen led Miami with 3 INT and Deondre Daniels provides the Redhawk with a lockdown corner. This is a very talented group and one that should be one of the tops in the MAC, maybe the nation.
As I mentioned earlier, Chuck Martin is coaching for his job. Miami suffered losses to Bowling Green and Kent State last season, games they were heavily favored and lost 5 of 7 as the betting favorite. Martin simply cannot afford those types of results this season. Miami faces a tough non-conference slate with games against Marshall, Cincinnati, at Minnesota, and at Army. Miami is good enough to go 4-0 in those games. MAC games at Buffalo and Northern Illinois could decide if Miami and can reach the title game or not. I have Miami winning 8 games, which would be enough to save Martin and get the Redhawks to bowl season.

Overview
Mike Jinks enters his 3rd season at Bowling Green with the fanbase hungry for a winner. Bowling Green was a MAC heavyweight before Jinks arrival. Jinks record at BG sits at 6-18 after two lousy seasons. It’s time for a turnaround or Jinks could be making his way to the unemployment line.
BG will look towards Jarret Doege once again to lead the Falcons offense. Doege started 6 games in 2017, completing 64% of his passes for 1,381 yards. There is little reason to believe that Doege won’t have a breakout season in 2018. 1st team MAC winner Scott Miller, (63, 722) returns at WR. RB Andrew Clair was named to the All-MAC team as a true freshman. Clair averaged nearly 7 ypc as backup. Keep your eye on sophomore Quintin Morris and TE Presley Motes. There are plenty of weapons on this offense and I’d expect a big season from them.
If Bowling Green is going to make strides to get out of the MAC cellar, they’ll need to improve on the defensive side of the ball. The good news is they return 5 of their top tacklers and 3 of 4 starters in the secondary. Safeties Fred Garth and Marcus Milton lead a veteran group. Garth is coming off of an All-MAC performance and Milton led the Falcons in INT. David Konowalski is looking to improve on a respectable junior campaign. He is the returning BG defender in sacks and tackles for loss. Senior Brandon Harris and his 92 tackles return at the linebacker position.
Offensively BG is going to turn some heads this season. For the first time since 2015, I expect the Falcons to be towards the top of the conference in offensive production. Defensively, they have to improve on the 506.6 yards per game and 38 ppg allowed. Sept. 22 is the home conference opener against Miami (OH), a win there and this team could make a bowl. I’m making a prediction that BG will more than double their win total from a season ago. Falcon fans, be ready to watch this high flying offense this fall! They’ll be the biggest surprise in the MAC.

Overview
Akron was the surprise of the MAC in 2017, capturing the East crown and playing for a MAC Championship. The Zips are getting a makeover on the offensive side of the ball with only a handful of starters returning. Kato Nelson made 5 starts in his freshman season and led the Zips to the conference championship game. Van Edwards will be the lead running back, coming off of a 343 rushing yard season. Kwadarrius Smith finished with an impressive 21.4 yards per catch, good enough to led Akron in receiving yards. Three starters on the offensive line return.
Akron’s defense was just good enough to close out some games last season. Nine starters return, including the top 7 tacklers. Jamal Davis provided an explosive rush off the edge, finishing with 13.5 tackles for loss. Ulysees Gilbert earned All-MAC honors after having a career year. Gilbert led the Zips with 141 tackles and 5 sacks. Akron returns all four starters in the secondary. Alvin Davis finished with 83 tackles and CB Kyron Brown led the Zips with 11 PBU.
Terry Bowden continues to have unbelievable success at Akron. The Zips have major concerns on the offensive side. Kato Nelson won’t be able to handle the load by himself. Akron will need some playmakers to step up, but I’m not seeing many. Defensively, the Zips are solid. Gilbert is one of the best players in the conference. Jamal Davis should have another monster year, leading to an improved defense. The schedule is daunting with non-conference road trips to Nebraska, Northwestern and Iowa State. Akron getting to 6 wins would be a major surprise in my book. A return trip to Detroit is unlikely this season, but the future is bright in Akron.

Overview
Sean Lewis takes over the impossible task of making Kent State a consistent winner. Lewis brings his high octane offense to the MAC. A QB battle between Auburn transfer Woody Barrett and Dustin Crum will carry into the fall. Justin Rankin will look to improve after a lackluster freshman season. Rankin nearly surpassed his rushing yards in the passing game. Speaking of pathe ssing game, the Flashes return the top four receivers from ‘17. The offensive line has experience but will need to drastically improve for Kent State to get out of the MAC cellar.
Kent State ranked near the bottom of defense nationally and that trend should continue into ‘18. Jim Jones was the lone bright spot for an otherwise abysmal defense. Jones led Kent State with 98 tackles and 6 sacks. DE Theo Eboigbe could prove to be a difference maker on the edge. Kent State is a bit thin in the secondary with Jamal Parker (11 PBU) leading the way at CB. Punter Derek Adams was an All-MAC performer, with an average punt of 44 yards.
A new era begins in Kent, Ohio and the future could be bright under Sean Lewis. Lewis will have his hands full at the beginning. There are question marks all over the depth chart. There’s not much to like about this team. Woody Barrett could prove to be a great talent if he wins the starting job. Kent State will finish last in the MAC East and maybe not even win a game. I’m giving the Golden Flashes a couple of wins and one in the conference, a moral victory for Sean Lewis.

Overview
Northern Illinois will be looking to return to the MAC Championship for the first time since 2015. NIU is the early favorite to make the trip to Detroit and it’s easy to see why. The Huskies return 8 starters from the last year. Marcus Childers is fresh off a MAC Freshman OPOY season. Childers can beat you with his arm and legs, throwing for nearly 1,700 yards and adding 473 on the ground. Spencer Tears and DJ Brown both return. The duo were the top 2 on the team in receptions. Jordan Huff is gone and Marcus Jones will look to be his replacement. Jones should find some big holes behind an offensive line that is returning all 5 starters. Transfer kicker Andrew Gantz will bring his award winning leg to DeKalb.
The Huskies led the MAC in scoring defense and total defense last season. NIU will need to replace their two leading tacklers but there is plenty of talent left in the cupboard. MAC Defensive Player of the Year Sutton Smith returns. Smith made my list of top defensive lineman in the country after terrorizing opposing backfields in ‘17. Smith finished with 14 sacks and an eye-popping 29.5 tackles for loss. Smith gets all of the attention but the rest of the DL is solid and all four return. The linebackers corps will have three fresh faces. Antonio Jones-Davis has the most experience of the trio. Mykelti Williams leads all returning defenders with 73 tackles. Corner, Albert Smalls gives the young secondary a veteran presence.
Northern Illinois has a roster talented enough of making a run at a MAC Championship. Offensively the Huskies are sound and should put up a ton of points. Sutton Smith leads a group of Huskies that should contend for the top defense in the MAC. NIU has some challenging games in the non-conference. Road games at Iowa and Florida State will be tough, they also host Utah. NIU draws the two MAC East favorites (Ohio, Miami (OH))but they get them at home. NIU also gets Toledo at home. Overall, the Huskies should be able to do well in the conference and book a trip to the MAC Championship game.

Overview
Toledo enters the season as defending MAC Champions. QB Logan Woodside is no longer wearing a Rockets uniform. He leaves big cleats to fill and Illinois transfer Eli Peters will battle Mitchell Guadagni for that duty. Whoever wins the job will have two All-MAC performers at WR. Diontae Johnson (1st team, ‘17) and Cody Thompson (1st team, ‘16) are the best WR duo in the conference. Jon’Vea Johnson is another talented receiver and home run threat for the Rockets. Sophomore Shakif Seymour is a talented young back, coming off of a 12 TD season. The Rockets return 2 starters on the offensive line but the other all have starting experience.
Six starters return for the Rockets this season. Safety Khalil Robinson may be the most talented defender on the roster. Robinson is the team leader in returnees with 67 tackles and 4 interceptions. Robinson is one of 3 returning starters in the secondary. Senior CB Ka’dar Hollman led the Rockets in PBU with 7. DT’s Nate Childress and Reggie Howard are two big run-stoppers up the middle. Sophomore Dedarallo Blue is poised for a big season after a very good freshman season. Kicker Jameson Vest returns after an All-MAC junior season. Vest converted on 25-30 FG’s. Sophomore punter Bailey Flint will need to much better for the Rockets.
Jason Candle has done a fine job as head coach for Toledo. If the Rockets can put together another great season, Candle could find himself moving up the coaching ranks. Replacing Logan Woodside is going to be a tall task for this team. Toledo is stacked at the WR position and Shakif Seymour could end up being a special talent. Defense is a big question mark heading into the 2018 season. If the Rockets defense can improve slightly from ‘17, it should be a very good season. Toledo hosts the Miami Hurricanes on September 15. This will be one of the biggest games in the school’s history. The Rockets should be able to hang around in the MAC West because of the schedule. Home games against Buffalo, BG, Ball State, and CMU should all be wins. The biggest game of the conference schedule will be November 7th at Northern Illinois in what should be a winner take all showdown. After it’s all said and done, the Rockets will end of in their 5th straight bowl game.

Overview
Central Michigan has quietly been one of the most consistent teams in the MAC over the past 5 years. Central Michigan is tied with Toledo for the most consecutive bowl appearances in the MA with 4. This season is going to be an uphill battle for the Chippewas. The one glaring bright spot would be the return of RB Jonathan Ward. Ward rushed for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. Former RB Devon Spalding slides to the wideout position. Tony Poljan will enter the season as the the starting QB. Poljan started one game, completing 62% and 78 yards. The Chippewas return just two starters up front.
Defensively, the Chippewas return 6 starters. They lose Joe Ostman and 3 of 4 starters in the secondary. LB Malik Fountain led CMU with 89 tackles last season, and returns for his senior year. Alex Briones is another solid linebacker returning for the Chippewas. Briones finished with 83 tackles and 5.5 for loss. Michael Oliver rounds out a solid linebackers corps for CMU. Mitch Stanitzek could be the primary edge rusher that could put up Ostman type numbers. Junior Sean Bunting returns, he led the CMU defense with 5 INT in ‘17. Kicker Michael Armstrong will look to build on a 7-11 season.
Central Michigan is looking to replace key players across the board. Ward is the spark that the offense will need to contend for a 5th straight bowl appearance. CMU should be fine on defense, I don’t expect much change from last season. Central Michigan could still reach a bowl with wins over Kansas and Maine in the non-conference. CMU avoids Ohio and Miami out of the East. Home games against Buffalo, WMU, Ball State and Bowling Green are all must wins. John Bonamego has done a tremendous job in Mt. Pleasant. However, this is looking like the year where the bowl streak will fall. There are way too many questions across the roster and the depth is a big concern in case of injuries. CMU will finish in the middle of the west but will fall short of bowl eligibility.

Overview
It seems like forever ago when Ball State was one of the best programs in MAC football. Last season marked the 4th consecutive losing season but there is optimism growing in Muncie for the 2018 Cardinals. Ball State’s season was wrecked by injuries to key players and will have those guys back in 2018.
QB Riley Neal is back, after an injury shortened season. Neal started 3 games, completing 68% of his passes and leading Ball State to a 2-1 start and near upset of Illinois. RB James Gilbert was another one of the star players that had their season cut short. Gilbert was a 1st team All-MAC performer in 2016. A healthy Gilbert provides the Cardinals with one of the best running backs in the conference. Caleb Huntley rushed for over 1,000 yards in Gilbert’s absence, so the Cardinals have a solid 1-2 punch. Sophomore Justin Hall was one of the bright spots for Ball State last season. Hall led the Cardinals with 78 receptions, 801 yards and 3 TD’s as a true freshman, garnering All-MAC honors. Ball State returns 3 starters but plenty of experience on the offensive line.
Ball State struggled mightily on defense in 2017. The good news is that the Cardinals will have their top 3 tacklers back. Jacob White led the Cardinals with 72 tackles and lead all returning players with 3 sacks. The biggest blow will be the loss of Anthony Winbush. JUCO transfer Shannon Hall will look to fill the huge shoes left behind. Brandon Martin is one of the top young talents on this Cardinals defense. The secondary returns all 4 starters (3 true sophomores) from last season. Josh Miller is the lone senior in the group and led the Cardinals with 13 PBU. This is a young, talented group of players. With better production on the offensive side, it should pay dividends for the defense this season.
Mike Neu can chalk last season up to bad luck. Ball State should be much more competitive heading into the new year. Offensively, the Cardinals are going to put up some major points. Neal, Gilbert and Hall are all poised to have a big years. The non-conference schedule is tough with @Notre Dame, @Indiana and WKU at home. Ball State has to travel to Ohio and Miami out of the east. The bright spot on the schedule is getting Kent, EMU and WMU at home. Ball State could surprise some teams and get bowl eligible but that would be a tall task.

Overview
The Broncos were left out of bowl season in 2017, despite hitting the 6 wins needed. Western Michigan returns plenty of firepower offensively. Junior QB Jon Wassink completed 64% of his passes for a measly 1,411 yards. It’s no surprise that the Broncos are a run heavy offense with running backs like Jamauri Bogan and LeVante Bellamy. Bellamy is the more explosive back, he averaged 8 yards per carry in ‘17. Bogan rushed for nearly 600 yards as the primary backup last season. D’Wayne Eskridge led the Broncos in receiving with 506 yards on 30 catches.Keishawn Watson was Wassink’s favorite target with 41 receptions and 7 TD. Four offensive linemen return, including C John Keenoy, who was 1st team MAC last season. The most intriguing player to watch may be 6’7” tackle AJ Reed, who was the Broncos top recruit in the 2017 cycle.
Western Michigan struggled on the defensive side of the ball last season. They return just 5 starters and lose their top 3 tacklers from 2017. One big returnee will be DE Antonio Balabani, who led the Broncos in sacks last season, with 4. Sophomore Ali Fayad is a big player to watch on this Broncos defense. Fayad did a good job on the edge as a true freshman and could be the best pass rushed on the team. Drake Spears will need to step up to replace a great group of LB’s that departed. Sam Beal and Stefan Claiborne are the two veterans in the secondary.
Jarvion Franklin’s departure is a big blow to the WMU offense. There are plenty of concerns and question marks on the defensive side as well. Overall, Tim Lester is about where he was a year ago. WMU lost 3 of their 4 MAC contests by single digits. WMU will need to improve upon that mark if they want to contend in a mediocre MAC West. Unfortunately, the Broncos draw Miami, Ohio and have to visit Bowling Green out of the East. WMU gets MAC favorite Northern Illinois in Kalamazoo in last November. Could this be the deciding game for the MAC West crown? I doubt it. This could end up being the Broncos first losing season since 2013.

Overview
Eastern Michigan lost 6 of 7 games last season by one possession, including 3 games in overtime. The Eagles will need to find a replacement for QB Brogan Roback. Tyler Wiegers transfers in from Iowa and is poised to begin the season under center. Shaq Vann returns for his senior season, Vann has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Ian Erickson will enter this season in the backup role despite leading the Eagles in rushing in ‘17. Eastern Michigan needs some new faces to step up at the WR position. Replacing your top three receivers is never easy, but keep your eye on sophomore Michael Thompson. EMU returns four offensive lineman, including all-conference guard, Jimmy Leatiota.
Entering in the new season, the Eagles have one of the most dominant defensive lineman in the conference. DE Maxx Crosby had an outstanding junior season, finishing with 11 sacks. Jeremiah Harris is the other big returnee for this defense. Harris was an All-MAC selection with 45 tackles and 6 sacks. Eastern Michigan returns all 4 starters in the secondary, a unit that ranked 2nd in the MAC in passing defense. Vince Calhoun leads the way with 78 tackles from a season ago. Overall, the Eagles return a ton of All-MAC talent this season. This is going to be one of the best defenses in the league once again.
Chris Creighton has done an admirable job turning this program into a winner. EMU had an opportunity to win as many as 10 games in ‘17, that’s unheard of for EMU. The defense is going to keep this team in every game. I’m very concerned about the new QB and lack of playmakers on the offensive side. This season, the MAC could end up being the best its been in many years. EMU does host Northern Illinois and Toledo, the two biggest players in the West. Road trips to Buffalo, WMU and Ball State will play a big factor in this seasons success. EMU has 7-8 winnable games on the schedule, let’s see if they can return to bowl season.
