Overview
Boise State has one of the best QB int the country in Brett Rypien. His numbers may have been down last season but he has proven in his previous 2 years that he could put up monster numbers if asked. With him under center the passing attack will still be at a high level despite the loss of his top targets. A.J. Richardson and and Ocatvius Evans both caught over 30 balls last season. Two freshman that could make an impact this season are Khalil Shakir and Steffan Cobbs.
Having Alexander Mattison in the backfield makes this offense even more dangerous. He topped 1,000 yards last season plus 12 touchdowns. With an experienced line in front of him he should have a monster year. With all the talent on this team there's no doubt that the best offense in the MWC resides in Boise, Idaho.
Nearly everyone returns from a team that was one of the best in forcing turnovers and stopping the run last season. The defensive line is going to be on another level this season. The line is a major reason why teams struggle to run on them. David Moa (DT), Sonatane Lui (NT) and Durrant Miles (DE) all have the capabilities to earn first or second team All-MWC.
They will be strong at linebacker as well. Stud LB Curtis Weaver had 11 sacks and he wasn't a starter. Tyson Maeva will go to MLB. He is the perfect fit to replace Leighton Vander Esch. Curtis Weaver wasn't the only freshman to make an impact last season. NB Kekaula Kaniho and CB Avery Williams were top 10 in tackles last season. Safety Kekoa Nawahine leads the team in tackles and interceptions.
Boise State has the best defense and offense in the league. They are strong at all the key spots on both sides of the ball. The Broncos have a challenging non-conference schedule with games at Troy and at Ok State. The conference schedule has them facing Utah State, Fresno State and San Diego State at home. Could this team end up being the 2018 version of UCF? Maybe.

Overview
The loss of Josh Allen won't be easy to replace. Two guys will battle it out in fall camp. Senior Nick Smith has some experience. Redshirt freshman Tyler Vander Waal seems to be a slight favorite for the job.
The good news is the loss of Josh Allen was really the only departure on offense. 10 starters are back. Having that experience will help make things easier for whomever is under center. They have a top 3 offensive line. All five starers are back including 6'7 LT Zach Wallace. The running attack behind that great line isn't too impressive. Trey Woods and Kellen Overstreet will get a good deal of the carries. They combined for just 3.94 yards per carry.
They bring back nearly every receiver and tight end. Austin Conway led the team with 62 receptions. C.J. Johnson was the deep threat receiver. Johnson also had 7 scores. While the offense has some strengths they have major weaknesses too.
The defense is going to be stout this season. They are good at all aspects from the front four to the secondary. The secondary is led by senior safety duo Marcus Epps and Andrew Wingard. Both are ball hawks who force turnovers. Corner is the teams biggest unknown. Antonio Hull is returning after a season ending injury. The other spot is up for grabs.
The front seven is damn good. Carl Granderson burst on the scene last season with 9.5 sacks from his DE spot. They have a stud inside too, Youhanna Ghaifan. With both of them back QBs in the MWC will be in trouble. At linebacker they bring back Logan Wilson who led the team in tackles with 119.
The defense is going to be stellar. Will the offense be able to do enough with a new QB and no run game? Probably not. Last season the defense held opponents to under 25 points per game in 4 of their 5 losses. They get Boise State and Utah State at home. Those two games will determine how they finish in the division.

Overview
Jordan Love is the outright starter this year. Love made some strides down the stretch last year. That should carry over into a better 2018 campaign. He will have all five starters back on the line. They have depth behind the starters as well with Alfred Edwards and Kyler Hack.
The running game could feature up to three backs. Darwin Thomas is the newcomer. He comes in from the JUCO ranks. His impact will be key. The Aggies will need to find more impactful WRs outside of Ron'Quavion Tarver. It could end up being Dax Raymond who had 41 grabs last season. While the offense might not blow you away they have some pieces to form an above average offense.
Keith Patterson is in as defensive coordinator. He has seven starters back from last year's defense that played well most of the season. The secondary is strong at safety with both Gaje Ferguson and Ja'Marcus Ingram back. Ferguson had 90 tackles last season. In the middle of the defense sits Suli Tamaivena. Tamaivena led the team in tackles and sacks. Keep an eye on OLB Tipa Galeai who comes in from TCU.
The defensive line has plenty of expereince. The Aggies didn't stop the run well last season but teams didn't want to throw on them. That may change this season.
This is an all around good team. Jordan Love is going to bring this offense to another level. Schedule plays out well without Fresno State or San Diego State. They will be right around 8 wins this season.

Overview
The Rams offense has been gutted. Gone are offensive staples Nick Stevens, Micheal Gallup and Dalyn Dawkins. Last year was suppose to be the year with those guys and they ended up with 7 wins. Could have easily been 10.
The Rams don't have a QB back who completed a pass last season. KJ Carta Samuels seems like a lock to start despite not being around for spring ball. Carta Samuels was once at Vanderbilt then went to Washington and is no at his last stop with CSU.
He will have some talented targets to throw to. Olabisi Johnson is the best of the returning players having nearly 600 yards receiving last season. Preston Williams is now eligible after transferring from Tennessee. He has first team potential if he finds his way as a Ram.
Izzy Matthews will get the chance to be the true number one back in his final season. He will be running behind a line that brings back both starters on the right side and grad transfer LT T.J. Roundtree.
Last season was not pretty on the defensive side of the ball. That led to mass coaching changes including a new DC John Jancek. He will move to a 4-3 defense this fall. The Rams are going to struggle on the line so a 4-3 might not be best suited for this particular team. One starter is back, Arjay Jean, he will fit into their DE rotation. DT Richard King and DE Ellison Hubbard are the top players for sacks last season. They combined for 4.5.
The strongest unit is linebacker where they have top tackler Josh Watson. They have experience at WLB and SLB as well. The secondary is in good shape too with FS Jordan Fogal back. Fogal was second in tackles last season. If the line improves his numbers might not be as high this season.
The offense is a wild card. The defense needs the four man front to produce for them to improve off a poor 2017 season. Trips to Boise, Reno and Colorado Springs will determine this teams success.

Overview
Offensively the Falcons were up and down last season. Hard to see much changing with four starters back and two of them are WRs. Falcon receivers only had 69 catches last season. They don't opt to go to the air too often but when they do Marcus Bennett and Ronald Cleveland are their top target. If Arion Worthman can improve his passing accuracy of 49.5% the offense would add another dynamic. Worthman struggled running the ball too. Not much went right for him in 2017. With four starters gone from a line that led Air Force to a top rushing team in the nation, there is concern going into this season. Tackle looks strong but the interior looks underwhelming.
Also gone from last years running back stable are their top two running backs. Taven Birdow will fill the FB role. Tailback will feature many backs until they land one a rotation.
Teams took advantage of Air Force's weak front. Until the line improves it is hard to see teams changing their strategy of running against the Falcons. They gave up 6 yards a carry. Improving on that number will be the number one task this season. The line comes back with experience and a promising defensive end, Jordan Jackson.
The secondary was strong due to the fact that no one in their right mind would give up the opportunity to run on Air Force. Air Force was 120th in turnover margin last season. If they don't improve on turnovers and yards per carry this could be a disastrous season.
The offense won't be as good as they were last season. The defense has too many major issues to be confident in major changes. This is not looking like a great year for Air Force. The schedule makes it very hard to see them making a bowl this season.

Overview
New offensive scheme comes to Albuquerque. Davie is getting away from the triple-option that has worked well in the past. He brings in a spread option look that will be run by offensive coordinator Calvin Magee. He will likely have QB Tevaka Tuioti as the starter. The Lobos do have options to compete with him though, Senior QB Coltin Gerhart and JUCO transfer Sheriron Jones. I would not be surprised if Jones becomes the starter at any point this season.
The line will see several JUCO players compete for a job as well. Tre Bland (OG), David Zavala (OT) and Jarred Sylvester (OT) will compete for starting jobs this season.
The running game will have JUCO influence as well. Tyrone Owens is the feature back but Ahmari Davis will certainly earn carries this fall. Wide receivers will be featured more this season. They have experience but it is really hard to gauge just how good these guys are with the limited chances they get. Jay Griffin IV was the top target last season as a freshman. Look for Elijah Lilly to have some big moments as he switches from DB to WR.
The defense gave up 30 or more points to MWC opponents 5 out of 8 times last season. They had the 127th ranked turnover margin as well. Not ideal. There is hope that they could improve this season with 6 starters back. The line should be strong with Cody Baker at DE. Baker will have several other members of his senior class featured throughout this defense. The secondary has 3 senior starters back. They will have to do better at forcing turnovers. The returning secondary members had just 3 interceptions last season. The top two tacklers from last season came from the secondary that is a major issue going forward.
There's hope that Alex Hart can elevate his game in his final season at MLB. OLB Rhashaun Epting got plenty of experience as a freshman, we will see if that translates into a better 2018.
New offensive scheme plus lack of continuity will have this team struggling early on. If the defense can improve marginally the Lobos won't end up last in the division. Scheduling gods were not kind to New Mexico. They have to face Fresno State and San Diego State from the West division.

Overview
Who's next in the great line of SDSU running backs? Juwan Washington is the guy. Washington in limited action had 759 yards and averaged nearly 6 yards per carry. With the best line in the conference he should have no problem putting up monster numbers and carrying on the SDSU running back tradition of greatness.
They have Christian Chapman back under center for one last season. Chapman has been great at managing the game and picking his spots. He is exactly the QB that they have needed and he has done a great job. His options at WR are a bit unknown but they bring in several good targets in their freshman class, J.R Justice and Kobe Smith. The 2017 class had 3 star WR prospect Ethan Dedeaux.
San Diego State has had a strong defense since 2014. That trend will continue this season. The D-line will be in good hands with DT Noble Hall back. Hall can makes plays in the center of the line. He tied for the lead in TFL last year. DE Chibu Onyeukwu didn't start last season. He is the teams top returning leader in sacks though.
Hard not to be excited about the secondary with sophomore safety Tariq Thompson back. Thompson had 5 interceptions last season. Parker Baldwin is back at NB for his senior campaign.
Linebacker Ronley Lakalaka brings back a team high 82 tackles. The two other spots are up for grabs. Linebacker Kyahva Tezino could be a nice compliment to Lakalaka.
There's no doubt that San Diego State is going to compete for the MWC title. They have the offense and defense to do it. They do have a tough road schedule with games at Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada. If they go 2-1 in those games they should be in the MWC title game.

Overview
Fresno State has found their QB. Marcus McMaryion completed 62.1 percent of his passes and 14 touchdowns last season. His numbers should improve with WRs KeeSean Johnson and Jamire Jordan back. Johnson had over 1,000 yards receiving last season. They add Oklahoma transfer Michiah Quick as well. The line has three starters back. Two of the three will be playing a new position this year.
The running game will return three players who had over 100 carries last season. Jordan Mims had the most yards, Josh Hokit led the team in rushing touchdowns and Ronnie rovers had the highest yards per attempt.
Fresno State doesn't have a special season without the amazing turnaround they had on defense last year. They went from giving up 30.9 ppg to just 17.9. The tenth lowest PPG in the country. Orlondo Steinauer has departed as DC. Bert Watts former UC Davis DC and Fresno St LB Coach replaces him. Watts will have plenty to work with considering they bring back all of their starting linebackers and secondary. Having MLB Jeffery Allison back will be huge. At OLB they return James Bailey and George Helmouth. Helmouth leads the team in TFL with 8. The secondary is just as strong with four starters including safety duo Juju Hughes and Mike Bell. Jaron Bryant is one of the better corners in the league. He had 4 picks last year.
The line is where the questions lie. DE Emeka Ndoh is the best of the group. He saw quality time last season. He posted big numbers in the first game vs Incarnate Word but was really quite the rest of the year. If the line can be middle of the pack the defense will be great again this season.
With so may returning players on the offense and defense this team has a chance to compete for a MWC title. The passing game should be elevated this year. The defense will be great with the progress of the D-line. They do draw Boise State from the Mountain division which hurts. Their road MWC schedule will be what makes or breaks this team with trips to UNLV, Nevada and Boise.

Overview
UNLV fans should be happy that they know who their QB is going to be this season. Something that doesn't happen too often. Armani Rogers had a successful freshman season winning MWC freshman of the year. He showed off his running ability by going over 80 yards in 4 games last season. He went off vs New Mexico for 193 yards on the ground. If he can improve on his 52% completion percentage, watch out. The rushing attack also features a heavy dose of Lexington Thomas. Thomas had 1,336 yards with 17 scores last season. Him and Rogers led the Rebels to the 18th best rushing attack last season. They will run behind a strong right side. Left tackle though is a concern with potentially a sophomore or freshman taking over.
Devonte Boyd never got the respect he deserved after a great career at UNLV. They have talent back despite the loss of Boyd with Kendal Keys and Brandon Presley returning.
The defense got better last season. They will take another step forward this season. Rebel fans should feel good about the hire of Tim Skipper at DC. The biggest concern is UNLV's ability to get to the QB where they ranked at the bottom in the nation with 11 sacks. Skipper should improve that. The line is senior led with newcomers mixed in.
They have experience at linebacker but that hasn't translated into much so far. Gabe McCoy and Bailey Laolagi should be in the top 3 of tackles this season for the Rebels. If they aren't that means this D is tanking. Safety Dalton Baker led the team in tackles last season with 99.
UNLV has a chance to be very good this season or just average. Rogers completion percentage and the defensive line will be the determining factor. The good news is they draw Air Force and New Mexico from the Mountain division. Their fourth game of the season will be a good barometer of where they are when they head to Arkansas State.

Overview
The offense had a slight improvement last season. Finding their QB was a big accomplishment. QB Ty Gangi showed a lot of promise late in the season when he threw for over 400 yards and 3 scores on SDSU. Gangi will have his go to target McLane Mannix back after a freshman All-American season. Brendan O'Leary returns as well and his role is going to grow this season.
The running game was not great last season but RB Kelton Moore secured his spot as a starter. Moore had 855 yards on just 154 attempts. Nevada should consider the run more often with how well Moore played. The line blocking for Moore brings back 3 starters. They will be exceptionally young in their two deep this season which is a concern.
Tough year for the Pack defense last season. They gave up 471.3 YPG. They also had one of the worst pass defenses in the nation. Four of the five secondary starters return. They are strong at all three safety spots. Safety Dameon Barber leads the team in tackles and interceptions. Corner should be fine with four players with experience returning.
The secondary would benefit greatly from a more productive three man front. All eyes will be on Kevin Scott to see what he can bring to the line after originally signing with USC. They lose Malik Reed at defensive end with his move to linebacker. Reed led the team with 8 sacks last season.
The offense and defense have a good chance at improving this season. The offense should be over 30 points per game. The Pack will get Fresno State, Boise State and San Diego State at home. I have the deciding game for 3rd or 4th place coming down to the last game of the season at UNLV.

Overview
San Jose State only topped 30 points one time last season. That was against Cal Poly. Hard to see this team improving a whole lot on their 15.8 ppg average. They don't have a QB that gives you a shot to win games at this point barring massive improvements over the off season. The line is in really bad shape as well. Last years team gave up 36 sacks. Both tackles return.
The skill players on another team would look better on paper than they do with SJSU. RB Tyler Nevens was a starter as a freshman last season. If the line improves he could become a 1,000 yard rusher. The receiving corp has depth. They had 5 players have 25 or more catches last season. One of their top targets is TE Josh Oliver who grabbed 35 balls last season.
The defense was hit with the injury bug hard last season but giving up 41 ppg is still pitiful. They also had a very poor offense that couldn't move the ball. That led to the Spartans D being on the field for an average of 35 minutes a game. To pile on to the bad news for the Spartans they were last in turnover margin last season at -26. Their best player Frank Ginda passed on another year of college and went to the NFL. Linebacker still has a chance to be decent with two starters back. Keep an eye on the progress of ILB Tysyn Parker and Isaiah Ossai who are both underclassmen.
The line brings back three starters. A line that only had three sacks and 11 tackles for loss last season. If the front three don't improve neither will the defense. The secondary will hope for improvement up front because they lost three starters. JUCO transfer Nehemiah Shelton is looked at as a starter on day one.
The offense is one of the worst in the nation, the defense is one of the worst in the nation. However they do have a good special teams. Don't expect much different from San Jose State this season. It will be a sad, sad scene.

Overview
The times of Hawaii having an explosive offense seems like forever ago. Well not forever but 7 years. Don't look for things to change this season. Dru Brown has departed after two seasons under center for the Rainbow Warriors. The QB competition is wide open. Chevan Cordeiro is the youngest contender as a true freshman out of Honolulu. With the line being one of the worst in the conference it won't make things easier. They do have talent at WR with John Ursua. He had 667 yards last season. You know things aren't looking good for the running game when the top rusher was a backup QB.
Hawaii has too much talent to replace. They are in the midst of a major rebuild.
The defense was just as poor as the offense last season. They gave up 33.9 ppg. They will need to settle in on a rotation at DE. The returning starters didn't make impacts last season. NT Samiuela Akoteu returns. The secondary doesn't look much better. Safety is going to be a weak spot this season. JUCO transfer Manase Time could be the influx of talent they need their. Cornerbacks Rojesterman Farris and Eugene could form a duo this season.
Hawaii can hang their hat on their linebacker unit. Jahlani Tavai leads the team in tackles and sacks. He has the capabilities of being first team all-MWC. OLB Solomon Matautia had a respectable 85 tackles last season with 3 picks.
This is going to be an ugly season in the beautiful state of Hawaii. This year is all about gaining experience for next season. They have a few opportunities for wins but they won't be anywhere close to 6 wins.
