Conference USA Football Preview
By Tyler Smith
Conference USA always makes for tough predictions. Since 2012 we have previewed CUSA. In 2014 we had the most accurate Conference USA predictions according to the Stassen.

Overview
FAU had one of the top offenses in the country last season. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles has left to go to Houston. His offensive scheme worked to perfection. Now they bring in 24 year old Charlie Weis Jr. as the OC. Weis Jr. has plenty of talent to work with starting with Devin Singletary who damn near had 2,000 rushing yards last season. Oh, and 32 touchdowns. 32 touchdowns! He will be running behind a line that lost both guards and center. They do bring in Junior Diaz from Tulane to start at center though. Both starting tackles will earn accolades this fall.
WR Willie Wright led the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns last season. He did that as a freshman last season. This year he will be joined by Jovon Durante. He started 16 games for WVU before transferring to FAU. Nero Nelson comes in from the JUCO ranks as well. This receiving corps will be special.
QB is up for grabs as Jason Driskel has departed. Two talented players De'Andre Johnson and Chris Robison will battle it out in camp to see who earns the job. If Robison wins the job he will be going up vs the team he originally committed to Oklahoma in week 1.
The Owls made major strides on defense last season. They went from giving up 39.8 ppg to 22.7. They bring back 10 starters. A new DC is in Boca Raton, Tony Pecoraro. Which means this team will be getting in the backfield more often.
Last season they forced 20 interceptions. Safety Jalen Young had 7 of them. CB's Chris Tooley and Shelton Lewis combined for 8.
The front four has high-level depth. DE Hunter Snyder had 6 sacks plus 8 tackles for loss. Opposite of him is Leighton McCarthy who came in from K-State and will make an even bigger impact in year two. Steven Leggett returns for his final season at DT. Charles Cameron and Marcel Southall come in via the JUCO ranks. Tim Bonner who we all know from Last Chance U is 2nd on depth chart at DE.
All Azeez Al-Shaair has done at FAU is make plays. He has 355 tackles in his career! Having him back plus Rashad Smith at OLB make this duo one of the best in the nation. Smith led the team in sacks and tackles for loss last season.
Find a weakness on this Owls defense? I didn't think so.
Lane Kiffin and the Owls are headed for another big season. They have the best offense and defense in Conference USA. The non-conference schedule features both Oklahoma and UCF. Don't be surprised if they win one of those games. The CUSA slate features tough games at Marshall, MTSU, and North Texas. Despite the tough slate I see this team having a monster year!

Overview
Had Brent Stockstill not got hurt you wouldn't be seeing people predicting MTSU to finish third. He's back this season. He comes in as the all-time leader in several categories already and those numbers will just continue to grow. He will have some great weapons to throw to this season. Ty Lee is one of the best in the conference. He had 79 receptions last season. Most of the unit will be filled by seniors and juniors. Jimmy Marshall and Zack Dobson will make their presences felt this season though.
The ground game should improve with Terelle West and Brad Anderson back. Anderson was one of the top pass catchers out of the backfield last season. The senior led line should provide them with better opportunities this season when called upon.
Last years defense was much better than 2016 version. They should be right around 25 ppg this year as well. Having Khalil Brooks back will be a big reason why. Brooks was one of the best at getting in the backfield from his WLB position. Darius Harris enters his final year at SLB. Cody Smith has a good chance at winning the MLB spot as a freshman. The front four is going to bring a lot of pressure along with Brooks. Walter Brady should have a breakout senior season after a promising junior year. Defensive tackles Malik Manciel and Jordan Ferguson combined for over 10 TFLs last season. If someone emerges at the other DE spot this line could end up tops in CUSA.
The secondary brings back 3 of 4 starters plus they add grad transfer Cordell Hudson (Syracuse). They hit the JUCO ranks for a top corner too, Chris Stamps. They need to force more turnovers this season. With the D line and LB being in top shape this shouldn't be a problem.
Don't sleep on MTSU this season! Last season wasn't a true representation of their offense. Brent Stockstill is back under center. That alone makes a major difference. The defense will continue their improvements this season. The first five weeks will be very difficult with at Vanderbilt, at Georgia, FAU and at Marshall. They have Kentucky at the end of the season which gives them 3 SEC road games on the schedule. That is the same amount of SEC road games that Arkansas has!

Overview
The running back combo of Tyler King and Keion Davis are tough to stop. They went for over 1,600 yards last season but expect them to do even bigger numbers this season. They will be running behind a line that brings back all 5 starters from last year plus some added depth. They were top 5 in that nation in sacks allowed last season.
One change from last years team that stands out is the loss of QB Chase Litton. All eyes are on Alex Thomson a grad transfer from Wagner. If things don't work out at QB, all the high expectations the Herd have this season could come tumbling down. Top targets are available for him to succeed. Tyre Brady, Marcel Williams and Willie Johnson make up my 4th best receiving unit in CUSA. They do have a major hole at TE to fill though.
Chuck Heater has departed from Huntington. Enter Adam Fuller to the DC spot. So don't expect too much to change. The front seven is loaded with nearly every starter coming back. The defensive line returns four of their top 5 players in sacks. DE Ryan Bee led the team with 5.5. Expect the junior combo of Channing Hames and Marquis Couch to get even better after showing good signs in 2017. Linebacker is even more talented with Chase Hancock, Artis Johnson and Donyae Moody. Moody returns from an injury that sidelined him. Hancock had 128 tackles which put him at 13th in the nation for tackles.
The secondary isn't quite as strong as the front seven but they still are very capable. Chris Jackson is one of the better corners in the league. He had 3 interceptions and 10 passes broken up last season.
New QB Alex Thomson will have no time to ease into things as they have Miami (OH) week 1, South Carolina week 3 and NC State week 4. The defense will be able to hold their own until the offense clicks. Another solid season of football will be played on the banks of the Ohio River.

Overview
The Ray Lawry/Jeremy Cox combo at RB has finally come to an end. Cox is back however and ready to take center stage. Lock him up for at least 1,000 yards this season. Handing the ball off to him will more than likely be Steven Williams. Williams struggled at times to not turn the ball over. If he can't fix that issue expect to see Blake LaRussa under center. The O-line should be fine this season with all 5 starters back. The problem is they don't have top level talent here. Issac Weaver has potential to be great at LT.
No one had over 40 receptions last year for the Monarchs. Isaiah Harper and Travis Fulgham had a combined 69 catches. Jonathan Duhart returns after missing most of last season. He had 48 catches in 2016.
ODU really got after the QB last season. They bring back the majority of their pass rush. DE Oshane Ximines was 2nd in the conference in sacks with 8.5. DT Miles Fox was 12th. DE Tim Ward was 15th in tackles for loss. This line is going to be special. Both linebackers are back Marvin Branch and Jordan Young return. Branch had 96 tackles last season. Young had 85 tackles and 6 TFL.
The secondary only brings back 2 of 5 starters but they do have experience at corner. Nickelback Sean Carter leads the team in interceptions with 3 last season. They struggled in turnover margin last season ranking 93rd. They hope to improve on only 8 interceptions last year.
The non conference schedule presents several good chances for wins. The conference slate has them facing Marshall, FAU, MTSU and North Texas in a 5 week stretch. This team has plenty of potential but they might need one more year to return to the top. QB play will determine how far this team goes. I see 6-6 and a bowl appearance.

Overview
WKU took a big fall last season and that was with Mike White at QB. They went from averaging 45.5 ppg to 25.5 ppg. The run game was the worst in the nation only averaging 60 yards a game. Only three starters ot hte offense. All three of them return on the offensive line. The problem is the line was awful. Running behind the line will be red shirt freshman Joshua Samuel and senior D'andre Ferby. These guys should be successful. Line troubles however could keep that from happening.
HC Mike Sanford is going to call the plays this season. He has a lot of unknowns to work with at QB. It is either true freshman Kevaris Thomas or career backup Drew Eckels. I see it being hard to keep a four star QB off the field and why wouldn't they want him to get a full year under his belt to lead into next season. WKU has been a staple for having great WR. This year look for Lucky Jackson to be the next big thing. With 3 of their top 4 receivers gone Jackson will get ample opportunity. Xavier Lane will be the receiver that emerges this season.
End of the day this offense is in the hands of the O-line and if they don't improve, it will get ugly.
The defense continues to be steady in Bowling Green. They have averaged under 27 ppg since 2015. This year they may buck that trend. The secondary has a wealth of experience. Sophomore safety Devon Key had 94 tackles last season. Key will be joined by Drell Greene who had two interceptions last season. DeAndre Farris has first team CUSA talent. He had 13 pass breakups last season.
Can the front seven do enough to support the secondary? possibly. The team only had 12 sacks last season. Of the players returning they have 7 sacks. Another year of only 12 sacks won't cut it. Carson Jordan and DeAngelo Malone will be counted on to try to change that this season. They will start two experienced seniors at DT Julien Lewis and Evan Sayner. Their top defense man from last season LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe left for the NFL. Ben Holt will now fill his shoes.
I am having a hard time seeing this team make a bowl this season. The offensive line and not having an experienced QB like Mike White back smells like trouble. If the offense can't move the ball then they could fall this season. They have a tough away conference slate with games at La Tech, At MTSU and At FAU. Not going to be pretty.

Overview
The four year combo of Alex McGough (QB) and Alex Gardner (RB) ended last season. They turned in a good final season going 8-5. Not only are those two gone but they lost Thomas Owens who led the team in receptions last season. They do have young talent at WR that should come into their own this season. Bryce Singleton could have a big impact as a sophomore. C.J. Morton arrives from Florida. Who gets them the ball will be decided this fall. James Morgan transferred in from Bowling Green. He had some good moments his freshman season but the next season he got benched. Morgan has the best shot at starting day one but Christian Alexander and Kaylan Wiggins will be in competition with him.
The offensive line brings back four starters. Which should help usher in running backs Napoleon Maxwell, Shawndarrius Phillips and D'Vonte Price. All three got carries last season. Maxwell and Phillips having a combined 185.
The D-line is loaded at DT. Anthony Johnson was a beast with 7 sacks. They bring in Teair Tart from the JUCO ranks. Tart will make an immediate impact. Another JUCO transfer Tayland Humphrey could as well. Milord Juste is back as well after starting last season. The question is who emerges at DE? It looks like they will be trying out some underclassmen to see who can make an impact.
Ferman Silva was at DE but has moved to OLB after having 7 sacks last season. Sage Lewis moves inside from the OLB spot. He had 55 tackles in 2017. You may see true freshman Donovan George get some time at the open OLB position.
The secondary lost all four starters but they begin the transition to their younger players. Keep an eye on the young safety combo of Jamal Anderson and Dorian Hall.
The defense has promise but will it all come together this season? Next year they should be ready. The offense is going to struggle. The schedule will not let them ease into it either. They have a great home schedule for the fans though in both the non-conference and conference slates. It won't be great this season but heading into next season with a lot of promise. Butch Davis is building a good program down there.

Overview
Here we are in year four and the offense is still stuck. The 2016 campaign was their best season yet but the other two have been under 20 points per game. They are switching to a pro style offense which doesn't sound like that is going to help matters. Granted they only scored 14.2 ppg last year. So it can't get worse, can it?
Eight starters are back. QB Hassan Klugh had more interceptions than touchdowns last season. If Klugh doesn't win the job Evan Shirreffs seems to be the next best option. The skill spots are much better than the QB situation. WR has the most potential. Running back will be fine with Benny LeMay we will see if things improve for him in the new system. The line is the strongest part of the offense. Four starters return, all of them seniors.
While the 49ers return 10 starters they were one of the worst defenses in the nation last season. They did have some bright spots against ODU and Marshall last season. Holding those teams to 14 or less points. The youth movement is now over and the majority of the starters are now upperclassmen that have started for a couple years now. Their best unit is linebacker. MLB Jeff Gemmell led the team with 106 tackles. Anthony Butler and Juwan return at OLB. Both had over 70 tackles last year.
The secondary and front four need to elevate to force more turnovers. They were -9 in turnover margin last season. With the combination of 2 interceptions and 11 sacks these units have a long way to go. Alex Highsmith and Tyriq Harris will start at DE. They will set the tone for this defense this season. Safety Ben DeLuca was 2nd in tackles last season.
Things aren't turning around for Charlotte this season. Brad Lambert will be gone and they can essentially start over without ever making progress. The schedule presents it's self with 2 good chances for a win, FIU and Fordham.

Overview
The offense did take a dip in production last season but that was to be expected. The good news is they still put up over 30 ppg. J'Mar Smith had a good first year under center. He took care of the ball, only 5 interceptions on 409 attempts. He will need to be more accurate this season however as he only completed 56 percent of his passes. With his receiving corps that shouldn't be an issue. Teddy Veal is back after a breakthrough season after transferring from Tulane. Alfred Smith missed last season with an injury. Having him back gives the Bulldogs another threat outside of Veal. Rashid Bonnette was second in receptions last season.
Running back has been a staple for La Tech for awhile but they come in with a little more uncertainty than usual. Jaqwis Dancy and Kam Mcknight don't have a ton of experience at RB. Mcknight is a former WR turned RB and Dancy hasn't had much of an opportunity so far. QB J'Mar Smith is their top returning rusher. With one of the top lines in the conference and there's no reason that this team won't succeed on offense.
Blake Baker has to be happy with how the teamed performed last season. With 6 starters back he has a chance to continue the positive trend. The front four are a key reason for the improvement. Jaylon Ferguson made his presence felt last season. He had 7 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. If he can find another DE to compliment him that would be huge. Both DT are back Jordan Bradford and Keonatye Gardner. Bradford is poised to have his best season yet.
The secondary features one of the best sophomore corners in the nation in Amik Robertson. Robertson landed on the freshman all-american list last season after having 5 interceptions. They have experience at safety despite losing two of their three starters. Dae'Von Washington led the team in tackles with 70. Washington will be joined by Brandon Durman who played in 7 games last season. He did play in 14 games in 2016.
The offense is going to be even better this season. Smith will make strides this season and put up big numbers. The front four will be special this season. With their presence this defense will be strong. Looking at the schedule they have to go to FAU and North Texas which won't be easy but the rest of the schedule is manageable. Expect a big season in Ruston this season!

Overview
Two years in under Seth Littrell and the offense is already scoring in bunches. The year before he got there North Texas averaged 15 ppg. Year one under Littrell up to 24.8 , year two 35.5. Major reason for that transformation is QB Mason Fine. Last season he took his game to another level. He had over 4,000 yards passing with 31 touchdowns. His top targets are all juniors. Jalen Guyton, Micheal Lawrence, and Rico Bussey all emerged last season. Lawrence leads the team in receptions and yards. Guyton had 7 scores.
The running game will feature sophomore backs Nic Smith and DeAndre Torrey. Continuing to make the running game at least a viable threat will be important for the Mean Green. The most important part of this years offense will be the O-line's ability to up their game. Last season they gave up 39 sacks. With the majority of the line returning it could be more of the same which will not bode well for the Mean Green.
The defense failed them in big games last season. SMU, FAU (x2) and Troy in a bowl game were all blow outs. Each one of those games saw the opponent scoring over 40 ppg. The front 6 will be the determining factor in if they can improve this season. Linebacker looks strong with OLB E.J. Ejiya back. He leads the team in tackles, sacks, and TFL. That begs the question, who else is getting in the back field? Next best option has been
DE Roderick Young, his numbers are underwhelming. Getting some more threats into the backfield will be crucial for this team.
Getting more pressure will help a secondary force more turnovers. They had 8 total interceptions last season. Out of all the players returning in the secondary only Kemon Hall had an INT last year. Safety Khairi Muhammad is always making plays. He had 94 tackles last season.
The defense has me concerned if they can't force more turnovers this season they may end up in the same boat. The offense will have no problems with Fine and the passing attack. The line should improve on their awful 2017 season but we will see. These three games will determine how the Mean Green's season will go SMU, FAU and La Tech. All three are at home, They lost to both SMU and FAU last season.

Overview
Bryant Vincent is back as the offensive coordinator. His attack had UAB rolling at 33.2 ppg in 2014. He has some talent to work with this season to get them above 27.8 ppg which they had last season. QB AJ. Erdely is back for one final season under center. Erdely managed himself well putting UAB in good spots. He also made an impact in the red zone with his legs scoring 13 touchdowns. The rushing attack will include Freshman of the Year in CUSA, Spencer Brown plus two transfers. Jarrion Street comes in from Ole Miss and Kingston Davis from Michigan. Expect a healthy dose of running this season.
Top receiver Andre Wilson returns. He grabbed 6 touchdowns last season. Keep an eye on former RB turned TE Logan Scott. The line features a heavy dose of senior starters. LT James Davis is one of the best tackles in the conference.
The defense played much better than expected last season. Allowing just 25.6 ppg in year one is no easy task. Linebacker is the most interesting unit. Fitzgerald Mofor returns after having 71 tackles as a sophomore. Stacy Keely has moved from DE to LB. Keely will be counted on to get to the QB this season. All eyes are on top 2017 recruit Thomas Johnston. He could end up earning a place on an All-CUSA team when it's all said and done. The line has a strong two deep. Anthony Rush and Garrett Marino combined for 17 TFL last year.
The secondary is in good shape with several starters back. Broderick Thomas is one of the best safeties in Conference USA. He leads in the team in tackles and interceptions. Corner Darious Williams is gone, finding a replacement for him will be challenging.
UAB had a hell of a first season back by going 8-4. Repeating that is possible but they will have to win against the top tier team in conference play. They get North Texas at home but MTSU and La Tech on the road. All in all this team will go bowling again this season.

Overview
Kwadra Griggs is back under center unless he flops and one of the new comers emerge. While his numbers weren't monstrous, he didn't turn it over. His accuracy needs work though. Completing only 55.8 percent of your passes won't get this team to the next level. He will have a steady O-line in front of him. They may have a true freshman starting at center but they bring back 3 starters. Including Ty Pollard who stands 6-6, 315 pounds at RG.
The skill spots are wide open. Not one returning receiver has more than 25 catches. The running game is similar with the top returning back having only 337 yards. Losing top notch WR Korey Robertson and RB Ito Smith won't be able to replace. At WR they have a trio of sophomores that will get a lot of opportunities. Along with the sophomore trio of Quez Watkins, Tim Jones and Jaylond Adams is JUCO transfer Neil McLaurin. Tez Parks looks to be their first option at RB but they will try several options.
The 2017 season featured their best defense since 2011. The concern is they only return three starters from that team. The only unit that will be in 2017 form is linebacker. Racheem Boothe was second in tackles as a freshman. He also had 9 TFL. Senior LB Jeremy Sangster will join him as the second linebacker.
Secondary and D-line have only 1 starter back. The team doesn't have a single player that had an interception last season. That leaves plenty of concern in the secondary. Even more concerning is that the newcomers have very limited field time. The line has more promise. They are strong at DE with LaDarius Harris and Darian Yancey. Behind them is Paxton Schrimsher who leads the team in sacks with 5.5. The DT spots will likely be filled by JUCO transfer Isaiah Johnson and Delmond Landry.
The defense has major concerns in the secondary. In this league that could be a major issue. The skill spots are a little concerning. I have confidence in Griggs though. Their schedule plays more difficult than what most think. Two road games to watch for are UAB and North Texas. Split those and this team could make a bowl.

Overview
Since the Roadrunners started playing in 2012 they have yet to eclipse the 30 points per game mark. They brought in Al Borges to try to change that. The Roadrunners don't have too many players returning outside of two lineman and running back Jalen Rhodes. The running game was a positive last season. Rhodes won't be sharing the backfield with Tyrell Clay this season. He will have B.J. Daniels and JUCO transfer Deven Boston. Boston could emerge as the go to running back this season. The line does bring back two starters but it will have it's struggles this season. If they can improve this season that will bring much hope to the 2019 season.
You may see JUCO product Cordale Grundy at QB. Grundy seems like the person for the job. His arm and legs give him an advantage over the other candidates. He will be working with a below average receiving corps. It is time to see what Marquez McNair and Greg Campbell Jr. can do as this is their final season.
The defense was special last season. Holding opponents to just 17 ppg. They do lose a lot of talent from that team but they bring back a significant amount too. First round draft pick Marcus Davenport was 2nd in tackles, 1st in sacks and TFL. While they won't be able to make up that production with one player they do have options on the defensive line. DE Kevin Strong Jr. is ready for a monster final season as a Roadrunner. Eric Banks will be on the opposite end, he showed potential last season. In the middle they will be strong with King Newton and Baylen Baker.
Josiah Tauaefa is ready to get back to his freshman year form after an injury plagued season. Another player who was plagued by injuries in 2017 was corner Teddrick McGhee. Two top tier safeties in Carl Austin and C.J. Levine will keep the secondary strong.
The defense should still be very tough this season. The offense will take some major lumps this season. They don't have enough continuity yet to be reliable.
They bring in Baylor who they beat last season. UTEP, Rice, FIU and Southern Miss will be the key match-ups for them this season. Year three under Wilson will be his worst yet.

Overview
The struggle was real for last season's Miners squad. They averaged just 11.8 ppg. That's hard to do. They were also last in that nation in total yards per game. Dana Dimel will need some time to turn this offense around. Ryan Metz will be in a QB battle with transfer Kai Locksley. Metz has shown that he can be a formidable QB but last season was not it. Honestly no one was succeeding at QB on last years team. The line will not be able to replace guard Will Hernandez. The line will be average at best.
The skill spots are bad. Real bad. Aaron Jones departed in 2016. The drop in production from then to 2017 was nearly half. Yards per carry went from 5.44 to 3.32. WR isn't any better as the top pass catcher from last season only had 23 receptions.
If the front four doesn't improve neither will the defense. Out of all the defensive linemen on the team only one player that returns had a sack. Not ideal. With a four man front they have to produce. Trace Mascorro has the most promise out of all the linemen. Linebacker is going to be a struggle too. They departed both starters from last season. Both jobs are open for the taking.
The secondary is the strength of the whole team. Corner Nik Needham leads all players with 59 tackles. He and Kalon Beverly had 8 pass break ups last season. Safety will be in good shape with Kahani Smith and Micheal Lewis.
Things won't get any worse than 2017, that's the good news. The bad news is there isn't a whole lot to be excited about this season. The game at Rice is this years biggest game. Travel to that game Miner fans.

Overview
While they had the 2nd best rushing attack in CUSA it didn't translate into much. The Owls were ranked 12th in conference in PPG and YPG. Just two players come back from that team. Expect a major youth movement throughout the offense especially at WR. WR Aaron Cephus is the only play-maker back. He had 5 touchdowns and averaged nearly 25 yards per catch. Rice only attempted to pass 246 times last season. That likely won't change too much this season.
The QB job is wide open. They have several contenders this season. Jackson Tyner seems to be the front runner but I wouldn't lock him in as the starter. Four other players will get a shot to compete. FOUR! Miklo Smalls, Evan Marshman, Sam Glaesman and Shawn Stankavage. Out of those four the most intrigue comes from sophomore Miklo Smalls. The line that will be protecting one of those 5 QBs took a big loss when they lost LT Calvin Anderson to Texas. All in all this is another unit that will struggle.
The running attack is by committee while the numbers say they had a great year it was average. Only 20 touchdowns on that many carries won't cut it. They bring back the majority of their rushing attack though. Emmanuel Esukpa, Austin Walter, Samuel Stewart and Nahshon Ellerbe all had 50 or more carries last year. They had several injuries so the carries were wide spread. Expect them to dial in one two to three guys this season.
The defense is going to struggle again this season. They bring back five starters but they had some key departures. The teams best player is DT Roe Wilkins. Wilkins posted 6.5 sacks plus 8.5 TFL.
You know you had some key departures when your leading tackler Martin Nwakamma had just 40 last season. He is the lone returning starter at linebacker. Anthony Ekpe will fill the void at OLB. His growth this season will be important.
New DC Brian Smith will want his corners to emerge as the best unit on defense this season. They will be tasked with man coverage often. They have some depth at corner. Safety however is open and will be settled in fall camp.
This team has to play 13 games this season. You could argue that is a good thing but if they are struggling it may not be a positive. The way I see it, its going to be a struggle.
